Gustave Eiffel's was chosen among 700 architects and engineers to build the tower that would commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. This 300 meters high tower was the tallest building till 1930. There are several figures of this tower that would surprise you. Did you know that its height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature?
One
of the the things that surprised me most about the Tower Eiffel is its actual
size. It is huge! I had seen the Tower many times on the TV, in movies, postcards,
etc. But it was not until I was underneath it, that I realized how big it is!
Some anecdotes... In 1923 a journalist rode a bicycle down from the first
level. In 1954 was scaled by a mountaineer. In 1984 two Englishmen jumped with
a parachute from its tip.
On the right bank of the Seine river in Paris, facing the Eiffel tower, the Palais de Chaillot's monumental architecture was designed for the 1937 world exhibition, the last colonial exhibition in Paris (at that time, France had the second largest colonial empire in the world including large parts of Africa and Asia).
Besides its spectacular view on the Eiffel tower, the Palais de Chaillot is worth a visit for its museums: the Navy museum with ship models spanning three centuries of naval history and the mankind museum.
Also watch the large metal fountains in the gardens of the Palais de Chaillot and the many rollers practicing around them. The walk from the Palais de Chaillot to the Eiffel tower across the Seine river is short and really worth your time.

| Varenne As I disembarked from a bus at Gare des Invalides in June 1960, I asked a fellow who appeared to be my age for a hotel recommendation. He guided me to Hotel de Varenne just a few blocks away. During that summer as I toured Europe on a Vespa, I returned to de Varenne three times because I felt comfortable there, its location relative to the rest of Paris was perfect, and the price agreed with my student status. In 1964 I returned again and enjoyed familiar surroundings, especially the timed hall lights as I'd switch them on, run down a half flight of stairs and up another, and hope to make it to an unoccupied WC while I could still see where I was going. Even the bidet still sat behind a curtain in my room. Nineteen years later, I returned and shared with my wife an elegant de Varenne, a splendidly remodeled, handsomely appointed hotel which had maintained the quiet and pleasant intimacy I had remembered years before. We slept well in a bed large enough to accommodate two tall Californians, awoke to a brightly lit, pleasingly decorated room, and enjoyed the luxury of a smartly designed modern bathroom ensuite. Though the hotel personnel had changed, the magnificence of the French heart had not. We had a glorious time. A year later, our son was born on Bastille Day--but we had already left Paris the previous June so I can't give de Varenne any credit on that account. We so look forward to our return to Paris and Hotel de Varenne in a few months' time.
